I can understand why Jessie Eisenberg may have decided to make this film. It probably seemed deep, meaningful and full of social commentary on the page, however on screen it all falls a bit flat. The emotional costs of raising children, fears of commitment and marriage, the loss of self in suburbia etc are all still there but get a bit lost. Is it a Drama mystery, an odd psychological thriller, a Sci fi film or a full blown Horror piece. Unfortunately the writer and director don't choose a path and as a result we get a film with an uneven tone and an identity crisis.
The two leads do the best they can with what they are given, the art direction is pleasing, but the direction, editing and overall colour pallette (dull) is something of a letdown. It's also about twenty minutes too long, it really drags at a few points when very little is actually happening.
Although I watched to the end, it was more out of curiosity than being gripped by the story or the characters.
This film feels like a short story stretched into a full length feature, and at times it really shows.
Interesting but it it never rose above OK for this viewer.
