I hate when a director fancies themselves an "artist" while trying to make a sci-fi film that is supposed to be based on real science. It's as if the director had no knowledge of physics, simple mathematics, orbital mechanics or basically ANY of the fundamental principles of how things work in space. I'm all about creative license and suspended disbelief, but there has to be SOME tether to how reality works. I'm surprised that the Astronaut didn't suit-up and try to swim his way down to the surface of Mars by flapping his arms.. I mean the atmosphere on Mars (the RED planet) was actually BLUE. Seriously. Absolutely zero consideration for sci-fi fans who prefer SCI over FI. Even a space-based Marvel film has a better understanding of how space works than this low budget drivel.
Plus, in what universe would any government on Earth (much less the USA) send a SOLO Astronaut to a distant planet, for the first time, to set up shop for others to colonize. Much less a mentally depressed loner who is so desperate to escape Earth that he's willing to commit suicide rather than attempt to get home. Admittedly, the acting was good, but the script was just awful, the set design was a joke, the props master should have kept a loaded gun on set and pulled an Alex Baldwin on the director and then the writers and then him/herself. I'm in favor of common sense gun control, but in this case I think a mass shooting is warranted.
At one point there was a completely pointless :10 minute montage of the ship hurling through numerous nebulas and gaseous clouds while on it's way to Mars, presumably to mark the passage of time.. Hey director... THERE ARE NO NEBULAS OR GASEOUS CLOUDS INSIDE OUR SOLAR SYSTEM. The closest Nebula is 700 light years away. The closest star to our sun is 3 light years away... It is beyond ridiculous to a 1st grader who has just made a crude model of the solar system. I know because my daughter just made a crude model of the solar system... no clouds! Read a damn book. Do just a little homework. Better yet. Never make another film as long as you live. Worst movie I've seen in years. Easily in the worst five films I've ever seen... and I've seen A LOT of bad films. I'd give it zero stars but I don't want to give the director any ideas for his next space film!
