I am astounded by the positive reviews of Emma (2020). As a huge Austen fan I was more than disappointed with this version. The only good thing about this film was Miranda Hart as Miss Bates, ever scene with her made me laugh ('mother you must sample the tart'). Mr. Woodhouse was not convincing as a doddering old man worried about the world (not to mention Bill Nighy is a handsome and lithe man, anything but a doddering old man). And WHAT was with the young girls marching through the village in red cloaks like they got lost from the set of The Handmaids Tale? I thought Anya Taylor-Joy was a poor Emma (and her tears were too fake when she was supposed to be upset), and her character seemed more bitchy, looking down her nose at everyone, and anything but the endearing meddlesome, but loving character Austen wrote. This is not a criticism against most of the actors in this movie, some of my favourites are in this movie. It was poorly written, directed and produced. They move far too quickly through the book and you don't really get to know the characters. Even Mrs Eaton is not annoying, but more annoyed with Emma. Never thought I would feel endeared to her character.
Do yourself a favour watch any other version, even if you do not wish to watch an older version I would suggest the 2009 mini-series by the BBC.
