This show isn’t revolutionary or amazing. But I think it gets way more hate in this review section than it deserves purely for being a show with puppetry as it’s story telling art. Puppets are not only made for little kids Jim Henson who revolutionized puppetry on tv even said himself he created the muppets and other programs outside of Sesame Street to prove that older kids and even adults can enjoy puppetry because he himself feared people would only view puppets as for kids due to sesame streets success.
I’ve only seen episode one but I’ll give my opinons
I think Evan the troll is pretty annoying as he’s just the comic relief but he does have an actual goal and is often tamed by Brenda the Barbadian so I can tolerate him.
The only part of his character I can’t tolerate is his singing, which thankfully is universally hated in this world. So hearing others drag on him for sucking and even hearing him drag on his own songs is kinda funny cuz boy do they really suck.
Brenda is actually a really good witty character with a driving goal and backstory which I’ll be it could have been explained better but I think she plays off Evan well as she puts his annoying traits into place and makes fun of him just when we the audience want to as well so it’s funny. Her witty comments ante humor are often funny. I don’t think a lot of reviewers understand the type of dry humor coming form he’d Evan’s humor is dumb but hers is mostly just pointing out the things we the audience want to make fun of too. Which I find funny as it’s not over done or anything. This humor comes from other characters too and it works.
The character duos and there goals and thriving forces are a bit generic so it lost points for being generic like that.
The time period which is medieval is also really nice as we don’t often see that being taken fully seriously and being immersive in children’s media but they did it here. Only other time I can think this time period was done recently was in onward but that was much more modern. Occasionally they make modern jokes in this show but it’s nothing too bad.
The puppeteer work is really good a lot better than last time Nick attempted it which was in that show mr. Meaty I mean this time the puppets won’t give us nightmares. The outdoor scenes ans indoor back drops are also really good as I feel like I’m right outside or inside with the characters.
4/5 too bad the character archetypes are a bit generic and we’ve seen them before in other shows and movies otherwise I would have given it a 5/5
