Um..no. This was my first c-drama. I became intrigued because it was playing on Netflix while I was getting my nails done at the shop. I went home and watched all 43 episodes. I am a Black American female that grew up in the inner city without much diversity in Asian culture except for what I learned in school and college. I took that into consideration and initially thought that this series was amazing. I loved that it wasn't hypersexual and that it was grounded in traditional morality. I could binge and not feel guilty about what I was watching, unlike American television. For these reasons, I excused a lot of things. Like the FL actings skills or the lack thereof. I know that Americans have acting on lock, so I went into watching the series with sober expectations. The lack of chemistry displayed in tender scenes was bad. I mean really bad. The kisses were weird and off. I thought that was just Asian culture.
Then I watched The Wolf after this series with Darren Wang. I realized, I had been duped. The Wolf pulled emotions out of me that I didn't even know I had. The Longest Promise irritated me on it's lack of depth for emotion. Chinese Art is known to evoke strong emotion even in music. I may be new to c-drama but not new to quality acting.
These 43 episodes that I watched was just horrible acting. I could hardly believe that Xiao Zhan played in both. Somebody needs to be fired. I wasted all of that time on 43 episodes of the Longest Promise and the ending was trash. I love fantasy but this was over the top. If you are new to c-drama like I was, please watch The Wolf. Even the soundtrack is amazing. Leave the Longest Promise on Netflix until it dies out.
