For my 10th grade honors english class we were assigned this book to read. Over the course of the year we have endured a 12 page research paper, a minimum of hour long stories we read and report on every night, pop quizzes, 100 word vocabulary tests where no word bank is supplied, while this list of things was a challenge, I was not bothered by it, but what has struck a cord was this book. While this book was portrayed to be intellectual, I found it to be unintelligible. The characters have Nigerian accents but are placed in Florida which does not make sense. The accents make it agonizing to read and process the story. There is no real plot to the book forcing readers to go down a spiral of nothing while reading. If you're a teacher reading this, do not assign it, your students will have no other option but to go onto shmoop to get the chapter summaries, if you're a student go on shmoop, if you're just looking for a read DO NOT CHOSE THIS BOOK to be you read.
