As an avid horror movie audience, I have gotten pretty tired of the variety of formulaic horror movies that are coming out these days. So, when Skinamarink came out, I didn't have too high of an expectation and waited all the way till now to give it a try and OMG I loved how different it is. This is one of those movies that I will never watch again, but wish I can delete it from my memories just to experience it anew all over again. Skinamarink challenged my perspective of what horror can look like. Most horror movies have plots and premises that are explicable. Even if strange things are happening, it's usually something you can follow with logic. Skinamarink doesn't, which effectively makes it creepier. It feels like it's almost messing with your head and you'll come out of it feeling unsettled and somewhat disoriented by what happened. It fully explores the abstract and unsettling childhood fears that we all have experienced at some point at home. Like have you ever felt unsettled when your house makes random noises when there's no one home? Or when you see your distorted reflection on a shiny surface? Or when a video/audio starts glitching in some weird way? If that sounds familiar to you, then you'll get the atmosphere/discomfort that the director is aiming to create. It is a slow burn, but it picks up, and the eerieness and unsettling feelings will fully set in. I would really recommend watching this alone and in an entirely dark room if you want to feel the full effects of this movie. The few downfalls I personally see for this movie is the slow pacing at the beginning, the eye strain that comes with looking at grainy footage, and the unusual reactions of the children. If the kids had more expected reactions/behaviours to what happened in that house, it will feel more realistic/unsettling. Overall, I think this movie was a breath of fresh air in the horror genre, but it definitely is something that you're either going to love or going hate.
