Player of Games is the best place to start the experience that is The Culture. It is a masterpiece of plot, dialogue and storytelling. If you hear the audiobook on Audible, the narrator (Peter Kenny) does one of the best performances I have ever heard. The Culture series in general may be the pinnacle of Science Fiction. I personally never expected to find a series that could match or even surpass the Dune Series for its overall depth, complexity and intelligence but The Culture may have done just this. It is truly amazing.
