She enters a man's world. She wins. She wins again. And wins. And wins. She shows little emotion about anything except chess. She keeps winning. And winning. The end. Seriously, that's about it for a plot.

Big fat nope. I really looked forward to this, as I am a fan of Edie Falco. But after watch two episodes I find it formulaic and totally predictable. Also far too many two-dimensional characters. One or two interesting ones would have been much better. Not sure why they made her gay - is that supposed to add drama?

I'm acquainted with that part of the world, and the cinematography is perfection. Shibden Hall is gorgeous, at least on the outside. I find the acting very good in general, but some of it is over the top. I would have liked it better if the story hadn’t focused on sexuality. I don’t find that subject very interesting, and being a lesbian was not Ann Lister's skill set. I wanted a lot more development of some of the supporting characters, and more references to the amazing things that were happening in the world at that time. All in all it was watchable, but not a great work of art.
