Well I’m a huge fan of 80s fantasy tv and movies and fantasy epic books so for a show to really impress me it has to really push my buttons.
Before I watched this series I rewatched Willow the movie and loved the trip back and the nostalgia it offered. I’ve seen it so many times since it came on VHS etc
So it was with great expectation I sat down to watch the tv series . Let’s get it out of the way and say the acting is pretty dire . Lines are delivered lacklustre and the characters are pretty selfish in their motivations. I don’t mind the storyline as such and reminds me alot of Terry Brooks Shannara series in its plot devices .
It was nice to see alot of nods to the original movie of course it needs to be its own story as well. I just wish we had better actors who actually realistically reacted to events around them . The humour is written really childishly and the story calls for more gravity and threat. Did I say the acting was really atrocious 🤪
I will keep watching though cause I do love this genre and I’ve persevered through Shannara , wheel of time , legend of the seeker and rings of power etc
A lot of people are turning off cause of the modern younger characters and they are grating and very unlikeable. Warwick Davis is functional and not always a great actor but likeable in the role and abit older and grumpier although again his interaction with dakina humans is awkward.
What I did love was the creature design and offered much needed darkness to the trite dialogue and acting . The monsters, villains look great but unfortunately smoke and darkness hide a lot of the design and I love creature design.
So don’t go in expecting much and you won’t have a bad experience watching Willow. I just hope it gets better and ditches most of the angst and makes the characters more likeable .
