The characters are mundane and typical, the plot is kind of an intentional emotional roller coaster without the feeling that you’ve actually gained anything good or worthwhile and the ending is sadder than the plot. The idea that you give up so much to move toward the abyss and loneliness and never actually grow to be a better person...sure you understood you didn’t have everything under control but that frankly should have been obvious from the get go. That’s just not enough of a payoff. It fell flat to me. I read it in 1 setting. Mostly bc I needed it to be over I didn’t want to have to finish it later for book club. Took me about 4 hours. It’s certainly not the worst book I’ve ever read paper towns still holds that for me and dear John but this is bad too.
Basically what we’re teaching our youth is logic and reasoning and hard work and selflessness be damned bc a strong orgasm and a promiscuous life of “loving “ lots of people is way more fulfilling of a life, don’t waste your life with one person. Ugh so annoying and frankly tired.
