Rawlings is skilled at describing pettiness. Her detailed, scheming motivations of people in situational interactions [that you don't really wish to know] sucks the reader right down the rabbit hole. You can't look away from the awful because you can't put the book down. There are loads of characters to keep straight--from adolescents in different stages of rage to self-actualized professionals [whatever THAT is]. This is a story from a slice of time within a community of human beings that is timeless.
