Went to food lab with my daughters at about 4p.m on a weekday afternoon. So my first thought was - underwhelmed. Only one other customer and if the place isn't busy, I expect it should be clean, especially early in the evening. The floors were visibly grimy and my table had only been wiped hastily at best.
We went there hungry so ordered a bunch of items: cornflake crusted chicken,
Triple fried Potato wedges, Hawaiian rolls, five spice enoki mushroom
Sliders, food lab burger, mac and cheese
They are appropriately named. It is an experiment! They are aiming for a 10 with how they cook the food and flavor profile, but falling short with execution.
I do think with time maybe they can get there. The Hawaiian rolls were slightly burnt, but really just Hawaiian rolls.
The chicken came served in 2 giant pieces of chicken. And sitting in about 1/3 c. Of oil
Chicken strips that were pounded thin before coated and drained off would have been perfect!
The burgers were pretty good. Although the food lab burger came with a cooked piece and melted cheese is just better.
The enoki mushroom wasn't palatable. We all tried it. Kinda tasted like a combination of old spices from ggranny'scabinet. But when the waitress saw we didn't eat it, she didn't charge us - no questions asked.
The mac and cheese was mediocre. It was not thick enough for my taste and the bacon was candied. It also came served with a square of cooked cheese. Mostly decorative because it's too chewy to eat.
It is a true "food lab" at this point imho. Hopefully, in a few months they will have worked out the kinks.
The service however, was very good!!!!
