SEEN ON SCREEN: DONKERBOS by @nicoscheepers
Steady and strong this series had me hooked and deserves to show worldwide. An instant classic. Each episode carefully ebb's on deep drama as we are taken on the journey of #Donkerbos - the town, the place, the message.
Cinematography is rich in clever shots and perfectly assimilates dark and menacing plot in a way that made me so proud to say - THIS is the level of South African film today! A compelling South African script we are given a good dose of multilingual dialogue that makes one acutely aware that this fictional town could actually exist.
Donkerbos is not your run-of-the-mill detective story as it really makes us see into the lives of its characters while giving us everything we want from a crime thriller. The profound energy of young actors adds a special relevance and the cast lines up oozes the best in SA.
Erica Wessels as Fanie and Nicole Holm as Marietjie really hit the mark. Some of the scenes, in particular, the final episode, must have been quite tough to film and only the finest actors can get it right. The entire cast weaves delicate secrets into an alarming social comment and themes one does not expect but must face.
If you're looking for a gripping mystery series with a substantial plot, then Donkerbos is available on Showmax. A refreshing change from the below-average detective shows being pumped out by both the US and UK, we can look forward to more wonderful work the Donkerbos creators as they know how to entertain on many levels.
