The first 2 episodes are lacking, as the pacing isn’t great and shoved so much information into two episodes that should have been spread out. The animation was pretty choppy and inconsistent. The other issue I had was the voice acting, which lacked the emotion necessary to make it realistic, and definitely needs work.
However, there’s more than enough positive aspects of the show to keep me watching. The concept and plot have potential. The mesoamerican lore and mythology involved is extremely interesting, and most of it is portrayed accurately. Much of the architecture, cities and designs are very similar to their real life counterparts and I can tell the creators did their research. The art itself is gorgeous and colorful, and the art style is reminiscent of Avatar the Last Airbender, while still keeping it unique. I think this cartoon really starts to shine during episodes 4 and 5, and improves on the negatives I mentioned earlier. I can tell the creators put lots of love into Onyx Equinox and I can’t wait to see where the story goes.
