Terry Hayes' first book I am Pilgrim was marvellous. Three quarters of The Year of the Locust is good - but then it lurches from being a spy thriller with tentacles in reality into bizarre science fiction, a kind of futuristic Lord of the Rings. It's as if the last section was written by a high school student - I mean, where are the editors in this!!! It loses all grip on reality in terms of time, plot, imagery...just a horrible let-down. They should have cut the last quarter, it would have been much better. Terry Hayes is a good writer - I hope he's OK, because he certainly lost some judgement in the last section of the book.
