Beautifully told series. Writing/dialogue a bit too modern at times, but it's alright, they don't push it. Acting is superb. Editing is just right. Bel Powley deserves all of the awards. You will cry and laugh, and cry and laugh at the same time. It's a tenner for me.
At one point in the series Tess asks "why couldn't the Jews just get ice cream in their own area" which isn't properly answered, and it's not right. I've read a testimony from a Dutch Jewish survivor who happened to mention that during those times of persecution and segregation, there were also surprise raids and arrests of many Jewish men who were just out and about in shops or public places that were designated for Jews. If someone wanted ice cream it would have indeed been safer to get it in the Aryan areas where mass spontaneous arrests of Jews wouldn't take place. The surprise roundups and deportations to the death camps would naturally take place in Jewish areas that were designated as such by Nazi law. In the testimony mentioned above, the gentleman's family managed to have an Aryan friend do the groceries' shopping for them to avoid leaving the house as much as possible, lest they be picked up on the street by a Nazi and never be heard from again.
