I love the concept of using the Fear Street books as a way to create a movie Universe, I think the main issue with this fourth movie was the exception and script quality. I've noticed a lot of people are criticizing the movie's independence in storyline from the previous three fear streets. However, I don't mind that they didn't mention the previously shown Shady side curse and the witch, it actually makes sense as we aren't shown much of the fallout from the murders at prom, which is the time the curse would've likely been mentioned.
My issue with the movie is the lack of interesting characters and development, the poor dialogue and general film style. They give the main character, Lori Granger is given so much potential with her backstory and yet her personality is so underwritten. I understand that she's supposed to be a reserved, shy and quiet girl but it feels like that isn't even portrayed in a captivating way. She's boring, much like the rest of the characters. They completely lack depth and development, every single character death was so predictable, boring and left little impact on me as a viewer. The first three Fear Street movies director did an amazing job of using good acting and dialogue to transport the viewer to the time period. In Prom Queen, they rely more off of posters, music, clothing and other ties to Pop culture to do that. Yes we saw the prince poster, yes we recognize White Wedding, move on. It helps, somewhat but the overall detached and dull tone of the movie just ruins the viewing atmosphere. The ending was the most gripping part of the entire movie which is honestly a shame because by that point I was debating whether it would be less painful to shove a tac under my nail than watching this movie. Any character development that might've occurred and made them even the slightest bit profound must've happened afterwards in the credits because I definitely did not see that.
I think this was such a waste of amazing potential, hopefully if they do another Fear Street movie they stick to the production and directing style from the first three.
