The show can be a polarizing watch, not gonna lie. It asks of its audience to have a suspension of disbelief, and good faith. The animation is gorgeous. There is a lot of dialogue to explain the history and setting instead of things being shown. Slogging through them can be a chore. The characters don't have any traditional cues of likeability other than them being, for the most part, regular kids and essentially strangers stranded together and forced to find ways to survive. I would say a major highlight of the show is it's understandable take on future technology and it's impact on humans, but it's not a stretch to say that it can get very trippy. Fans of sci-fi and brain-wracking shows would love the mental exercise, but it might not be very easy for casual viewers. If you're interested in theoretical near-future tech, this show portrays it exceptionally well. If you're interested in seeing a disaster show with all the usual plot beats, it does them well with it's amazing sci-fi twists. But the main highlight of this show is, as any good disaster movie, the humanity of the characters. How they react, the teamwork between them, how they outsmart the problems they face, and in the end, their stubbornness in doing what they believe is right. After gathering all the pieces of the puzzle, and watching these kids survive and even save a good chunk of humanity in the process, the ending will leave you comforted with the fact that we humans, while having great power for self-destruction, can also still be kind to each other and innovate ourselves out of stagnation. TL;DR - The show isn't for casual anime watchers, please invest some time and mental energy for the show, the ending will leave you in awe and full of hope.
