What a great adaptation!! It stuck true to the primal whilst expanding on the relationship between Ariel and Eric. The extra 45 minutes of footage did not make the movie feel long, in fact I found it to be very well balanced.
They used that extra footage very effectively to not only help you fall in love with the animal counter parts but also learn more about prince Eric and his obsession with the ocean.
The animal counter parts (scuttle,Sebastian, and flounder) were amazing. Although I had my doubts about awkwafina and the overall design of the characters seeing them in action was fantastic. Especially Sebastian, he was a true star and Daveed Diggs really rose to the occasion.
The flow of the movie worked very well and I not only found myself not feeling tired by the end of it but I also found myself wanting more. Not in the way where the movie didnโt give me enough but in the way that I didnโt want it to be over.
The casting was absolutely perfect. Halle is truly my Ariel. She was able to convey so much emotion in her face and body language that even without words you knew exactly what she was feeling. And I canโt praise Mellissa McCarthy enough, she really gave it her all and I can truly say that her โPoor Unfortunate Soulsโ was maybe the best song in the movie. It was very sultry and slowly picked up energy, and once the energy was there it really was a stand out.
After years of waiting and countless leaks I canโt truly say this movie exceeded my expectations and it is definitely something worth seeing in theaters.
