I was curious to watch this movie for all the controversy it had sparked
It’s a great story to portray the reality of being a young girl in today’s society where young girls feel pressured to fit in, be pretty, popular and loved, while dealing with personal issues like family problems, personal and social stand
I think the story could’ve been told the same way without overly exposing children into a sexual light so the director gets a zero from me
But the story, the struggle, the reality of conflicting cultures that refugee children experience without any support from society, school, system, is the true take away here.
The mother struggles with the choices she’s forced to make, the children are hurt, the elders enforce what they’ve always known to be right and the kids have to figure it out in their own
It’s a sad story and I’m sure, reflective of many untold ones with a less happy ending
But I agree that the sexualization of such young girls was unnecessary and I hope Netflix cuts some of the scenes.
