This story, set in a fantastically creative world and the characters who are endearing and fascinating, captured me from the beginning and never let go. I am at a loss to describe the incredible depth Rwizi allowed his characters to develop, and he leads us to see their strengths and flaws. From the protagonist, Salo, to the corrupted evil antagonists, Rwizi made them more than a cliche. He gave them a reason and a purpose for how they came to be. Rwizi used innocence, compassion, love, guilt, rage, jealousy, and so many more paths to bring his story to life. Ultimately, I think it is a story of good versus evil, but nothing is straight forward.
The cultural aspects enriched the setting and although many terms were unfamiliar to me, Rwizi created a world full of color and life. I can see that he leans on old legends of his culture and weaves them into a saga of worth. It is a complex story and is not a fast read, but very rewarding. I highly recommend this series.
