Watched this at home on Fandango.....and happy I didn't pay for theatre tickets. The plot was ripped off from Law and Order and any number of Cinderella stories. Best Original Screenplay?? Really? Long scenes of people screaming at each other, gratuitous SEX and violence, and a triple dose of profanity (I am not a prude). Very predictable with the usual bumbling ethnic thugs. The bar for Oscan material has definitely been lowered. An overly long, drawn-out affair a little better than a marginal movie of the week.

If my wife had not read the book I would have been lost. The subject matter is important. I appreciate the story having read numerous books on the Civil Rights Struggle....but.... It dragged along sooooo slow I ended up doing some fast forwarding to get through it and didn't feel guilty. Lucky we watched it on Fandango. If we drove 40 minutes to a theatre we would have been sorely disappointed.
