I have read several books by Christopher Curtis and "The Watsons go to Birmingham-1963 is my favorite. The humor in the characters as seen through Kenny's eyes is fantastical I think because Kenny is only 10 years old. I got to live the story when Kenny speaks with maturity and I also got to see the 10 year old view of a given situation which gives me a more voyeuristic view.
I taught 4th grade and this was my favorite to read aloud to my class each year. Some of the kids didn't really get into it much but most did and when we got to the part that ties in with actual history on September 15th, they were all riveted to their seats listening.
I love the descriptive language Mr. Curtis uses to tell the story
