Passion of Christ is an absolute masterpiece. As a practicing Catholic christian this really made me examine and see all the sins that I have done which caused Jesus to die. This is an authentic film that doesn't stray from the Gospels or the New Testament or add its own interpretations.
I personally think that the violence depicted was fitting because in this day and age we romanticize crucifixion. We are so detached from the reality of what Jesus the Son of God went through. You see the humiliation, mockery, physical torture, and the gruesome way of suffocation by hanging on a cross. It inspires a sense of gratefulness that God loved us so much to send us a Savior.
It beautifully conveys human guilt through St Peter, and selflessness from Jesus. I think Mary was also done fabulously and you see a true Mother's pain. The Aramaic and Latin honestly add to this film's authenticity so we as Film watchers feel as if we are right there during the final hours of Christ.
The flogging is the hardest part to get through and when I watched it for the first time I cried because I realized that every whip Jesus bore was my sins. Every human being must see this film!
