It's a coming of age for Michael, love for the first time for Hanna and Micheal. For Hanna it's learning you have a choice. Both were in love with each other and yet being hurt by anothers actions. I don't think Hanna ever wanted to hurt Micheal she was learning through him about love
So what kind of life did she have growing up and why things were black or white.
When stationed in Germany I fell in love with an older woman and I could understand Michael.
