At first I thought Bad Mormon would give me insight into the innards of Mormonism and the functioning of a Mormon family and their relationships with those outside their families.
It did give me certain factual information about what goes on within the religion. But I soon realized the book was more about Heather Gay and her wild escapades, her supposed achievements, her lust for a very superficial status life style and her continual musings about it all.
There was very little information about her daughters, her parents and her siblings. How did she relate to her siblings growing up?She obviously didn’t talk much with her older sister or she would have known about the magic underwear at a much earlier age. How did her parents relate to each other and to many other children in the family. The book reads as if she grew up as an only child.
The author real did little to explain her differences with Billy. Exactly why were they so incompatible. What was he like? What interest’s did each have that the other couldn’t enjoy? My reading told me that he was as angered by the huge amount of money she spent on her oldest daughter’s baptism and that she didn’t like the fact that he made her fly on South West when he could have summoned a private plane. From the little she wrote about the relationship. it seemed to me that she thought she was marrying a very wealthy man and was surprised he didn’t want to live the lavish life style she was expecting him to provide.
From the breakup of her marriage to the end of the book, I was disgusted by the Heather Gay who emerged. I certainly did not sympathize with her pursuit of a fast life with other divorcees, her lust for high living and her zeal to hob nob with celebrities, influencers, etc. Heather Gay would not be happy no matter into which religion she was born.
