Ms.Marvel was an excellent show! I am desi, and I can relate to many of the things that Kamala herself goes through in the show. Furthermore, Iman Vellani's portrayal of Ms.Marvel was impeccable, and the show is absolutely built around her incredible performance. They say a good actor is the one that isn't acting, and that couldn't be more true about Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan.
I must also commend Yasmeen Fletcher and Matt Lintz for their excellent portrayal of teenage mannerisms, probably due to the fact that they both are very young. Rish Shah as Kamran was excellent casting, and the chemistry on screen between Iman and Rish was just *insert chef's kiss*. Rish did an especially good job of representing the way that kids with desi immigrant parents act and interact with of other kids of the same descent at school and in the community.
The show also is humorous, not least of which because a literal comedian plays Kamala's older brother, Aamir. The sarcastic and funny quips and lines delivered by the teenage characters are very similar to the exchanges high schoolers have in real life. Her friend group is also quite relatable, and her obsession with the Avengers absolutely hits the nail on the head for us die-hard Marvel fans.
The portrayal of the history of the India-Pakistani conflict that became the Partition was done brilliantly, and of course, the plot line beautifully tied into the Partition story, which hit closer to home for us desis.
The Marvel magic, of course, was there. It is easy to tell that the directors had a clear, well thought out vision, and they followed through with it. The CGI is, as expected in the MCU, on point, and the cameo from Farhan Akhtar and the mentions of Shah Rukh Khan/other Bollywood films were culturally accurate and, if I were watching this in a theater, I would almost certainly be squealing with excitement and jumping and pointing at the screen. I might get thrown out for it, but that's not important. The scripting is excellent. I'd like to specifically point out a scene in which Bruno and Kamala are having a conversation outside of the gyro street shop, which is just so beautifully and comedically done. The chemistry between Kamala and Bruno is really shown in this scene as two dorky, nerdy, average teenage kids who just found out that one of them has powers.
Iman Vellani said in an interview that this show is a love letter to the MCU lovers. This is expressed with every second of this show, and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone with some free time on their hands.
