Inventive. I'll give it that. But the first hour or so is like 'what the hell is going on'?.... then it becomes a bit clearer. Just a bit.
The dialogue is terribly uncohesive and incomprehensible, poorly voiced (apart from Cain of course and Debicki). Otherwise, it was like listening to slurry and sludge, which made understanding what was happening even hader for this complex tale.
The action sideof the movie was pretty good - but again, melted my brain to understand what quite was happening, since some time lines are running in revers and others arerunning forward.... and some are a mix of both! Whoa. I mean if you want to trip out this is pretty wild. But a few pointers early on would have helped.
The use of Russia, Ukraine and good old Uncle Sam in the mix was an overt finger pointing excercise; evil Russkie Oligarch tries to destroy the world but the US rides to the rescue with the help of a Ukranian supermodel. Oh dear. How much political signal can be squeezed in?
So, as a Sci-Fi fan and die hard, this was visually exciting, not well set up and explained (even a little clear prologue would have helped) and overtly anti Russian and a political hit piece from Hollywood. Seems about on the money for global politics now. But a disgrace... not to film making, but to humanity and the American view of the world.
Despite this, I have given 3 stars, since it is inventive and superbly shot. But you may as well watch a silent film for all the clues the dialogue gives.
