Nearly finished reading this book in one long session as I couldn't put it down. Amelia Gentleman does a great job telling the stories of some of those affected by the "hostile environment" (which actually began well before 2010).
A good read but also very sad and disturbing. Can't help thjinking that if circumstances had been different and I had been born in Jamaica before my parents came here I could easily have been affected by this situation. I could have lost my job, been detained or even deported, leaving my family behind. I feel sad and angry about it and reading these accounts really tells the story of how they felt and still feel today.
These stories need to be told and shared as it is part of the history of Britain. Being Black in Britain has never been easy and this book tells of the atrocious treatment of some of those who came to work here after being invited to help the rebuilding after WWII.
Thank you for being the person to do this, to listen to the stories, keep on phoning and writing. Thank you xx
