The Laments of the Soul, published in Autumm 2023, by English Poet/ Novelist Peter Hague, written in a biographical style have a sense of poetry about them while telling a strong narrative that instills reflection. Beautifully written, with rich poetic language and a tinge of humour. I like the part where Hague would reminisce his childhood during a visit to his doctor — " I was sitting with my mother in 1956, when medicine was almost fake, but well presented. I watched a noble clock, ticking to the stride of a swinging spoon..." That was really beautiful. Hague is profound. His poetry is expressive — capturing the essence of the human experience from his boyhood and towards his journey to adulthood — in a personal and universal way. Saddled with curiosity as a child, a keen observer who'd seek to understand the world around him — driven by a sense of wonder to know something. The book is also a reflection of racism. I could read exactly what Hague was feeling when he thought out state of affairs. His flow of words moved the book smoothly. Hague's narrative voice and style relates to words and the way he puts them together. The way this author looks at the world, a unique sensibility, a voice that comes deep within Hague's heart and soul. He is serious but very witty which makes for an engaging read.
