I am astonished over the amount of 1 star reviews this film is receiving. That is until i read them, "Where did the zombies clothes go" or "why do the zombies act like that", if these are seriously your gripes with this film - I do not know what to tell you. You are very clearly a fan of zombie related media more than you are of films and if you are above the age of 12 - this should be concerning.
First off the cinematography of this film was phenomenal. Whether its the beautiful sprawling sunsets (littered by some daunting figures on the horizon I might add) or the super intense bullet time shots, each moment and mood is perfectly captured. The highlight for me in this was the Alpha chase to the island - unbelievable. Visually this film feels like the perfect evolution from the first, cagey intense low budget feel complimented by some amazing landscape shots to let you breathe a little.
I felt the story was great and this new world was explored in a really cool way. You are not going to get an answer to every piece of lore you'd like but that's fine, you're not supposed to - use your imagination.
Masculinity, back-in-my-day-isim and Brexit (hilarious when you think about it but brilliant) are all explored in this film. However, how death is handled in this film is moving - brought me to tears! The sequence/montage with Spike in the bone yard was next level stuff.
Danny Boyle tells this story using his unique narrative style. He can flick the switch between serious and unserious flawlessly. He really captures the mindset/voice (sense of cynicism and humour) of people from Ireland and the UK. I would imagine those complaining about the jumpy tone are not from that neck of the woods! (They just don't get it).
Its just really nice to watch a film with characters that feel and sound like people you know.
To me the film wraps up the story perfectly (despite what many say). Spikes journey of growth has reached an satisfying conclusion. Despite the epilogues sequel set-up ending (which was as hilarious as it was intriguing) this remains the case.
All in all, A1 film. If you didn't get it... good luck!
