Maybe the best way into this book is to start with the author's approach. There is a story to be told here: Of crime, people, chance events, regrets, plenty of what ifs. That the story itself is told by the author in indirect manner, with almost countless asides, is for me a detriment. I also found distracting the changes in voice and perspective that too often seem affectation. Too bad: the story was there to be told if the book had been subjected to more extensive editing.
