Jazz richly does what its title implies. An unnamed narrator weaves us through these lives that carry the hopes of a post-slavery Harlem and the reality of the racism that is never uprooted. Morrison captures these characters’ lives and the larger world and history in which they live and dream, and layers them like jazz notes on a jazz score. The novel is rich and dense and wonderfully told.
