This movie was genius, I was not expecting all of the various themes, genres and lore with vampires, black culture and historical context. I don't typically like horror, but this movie didn't feel like "horror" at least not in the shallow sense, but more of a horrific social historical reflection and commentary on capitalism and racism.
Ryan Coogler's mastery and skill at creating blockbusters is so well presented, in this work that is all his own. And he wrapped it in a story line that wasn't a spiritual commentary or emphasis (which is also why I enjoyed this film).
As a person of faith, it had various spiritual themes, including Christianity but that was not the message, as the title and trailer suggested. This made me a stronger Christian, understanding the facts, the historical truth in hoodoo in southern american and african black culture. And it was easy to digest that Sammie, one of the main characters was entering a world of sin, as he walks away from the church. A prodigal story in some regards.
Stay for the music at the end, listen to the words! Enjoy cinema at it best!
