Jojo Rabbit achieves innovation in a way few movies do. Imaginative is not an adequate word to describe its uniqueness. It’s on the level with Dr. Strangelove in its thought-provoking boldness; and it’s a bit magical like Hugo at times. The film’s blend of satire, violence, sweetness, and Pythonesque absurdity is quite stunning. Cynical and disillusioned Nazis save the innocent; death, nationalism, and ignorance combine with preteen discovery, human courage, and consequential miscalculation. The story makes you both sick to your stomach and belly laugh. Don’t over analyze the film either. Appreciate its creativity. If you aren’t moved by this type of storytelling, you might do well to read more history, fantasy, or watch more Flying Circus. Terrific film. The critics simply look for too much meaning. So what if it doesn’t fit as allegory to the current era. It’s just a film that allows creative story-telling to lead a film.
