Do you like the cinematic shots of the desert and dream sequences of Zendaya for several hours? Then this is the film for you. I will be honest and say that I have not read the books beforehand, so I understand those who have may have a higher opinion of this film - however that is kind of my biggest gripe. This is a really good looking cinematic piece that would be a nice supplement to accompany a book, and all the costumes, special effects, and visual design in general is quite spectacular I must agree. But if you make a film, regardless of whether it has source material or not, it has got to make sense, or be able to stand on its own. Unfortunately, this adaptation of Dune feels both dragging and jumpy, where, despite the enormous amount of character exposition within the dialogue, the amount of location jumping around that is done by the editors, or overly convenient and jarring story connections, makes most of the characters feel lifeless and dull, and the story rushed and hard to follow. I feel I may enjoy this more if I read the books and got the context, however as a standalone film, it fails to draw a new audience member in, despite the wonderful cinematography. I can see why previous fans love it, but without previous context, this film falls very flat.
