SOME SEQUELS SHOULDN'T BE MADE
I seriously hate to do this, but I have to give Gladiator 2 a score of "RIDICULOUS".
It's absolutely ludicrous and simply a cash grab to see if Denzel, Pedro Pascal and the fanstrength of the original can pack theaters.
The premise, in short, is that Luscius (Aurelius's grandson, and son of Lucilla from the original) was sent away by his mother to protect him from would-be assassins as he's heir to the throne. It is now confirmed he is the son of Maximus as Lucilla's first husband was LGBT and she took on Maximus as a lover who sired him. Under a new name, "Hanno", and in a new country, he meets a woman, makes her his wife only to lose her to the advances of the Roman army which lands him in captivity. He, of course, exhibits superior fighting skills and rises to the top of the Gladiator rolls intent on killing the general who killed his wife.
JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL.
Without giving away spoilers, I must say that the premise was absolutely preposterous to the point that some of the casting made no sense. Mescal looks NOTHING like Luscius and without the military background of Maximus, he'd never have been as victorious as the film has him become.
But there are so many liberties taken with the set pieces that this film devolves into loud, colorful violence and makes less and less sense as the film rolls.
The film really killed my expectations by having the initial gladiator fight be against some rabid CGI baboons. While I could have accepted LIVE, trained baboons, the CGI made me cringe.
There is a record of a rhino at the inauguration of the Colosseum in 80BC. It didn't fight men, but a bull, bear, buffalo, bison, lion and two steers. The other rare mentions of rhinos in Rome are of those in menageries, to be admired as exotic creatures. This movie would have you believe that Rhinos were used as noble steeds by the Gladiators.
The Romans, apparently did reenact many famous battles - even naval battles - "Naumachiae" - but this movie would have you believe the Romans imported full grown sharks and millions of gallons of water.
The main antagonists, the corrupt, arguably insane emperor twins (Twinperors?) Geta and Caracalla stage the battles in the same vain as Commodus did, but they aren't nearly as charismatic as Joaquin Phoenix was.
But you're here for DENZEL right? This is his TRAINING DAY in ANCIENT ROME. Denzel does a good job portraying slave-become-Gladiator-become- Antonius Proximo. Macrinus wants to overthrow the Twinperors and take over. An LGBT kiss scene was taken out, probably so the CCP wouldn't ban it, but you can bet it'll help sell the Blu Ray.
Overall, this movie had plenty of ridiculousness and fan service, but there wasn't a single scene that hit like any single scene from the original. There will always be only ONE Gladiator and his name was MAXIMUS DECIMUS MERIDIUS.
