A. To heck with the critics. I didn't go to this movie to hear clever dialogue or watch a lame love story (ie. "Pearl Harbor.") I went to see how historically accurate they were going to get the thing, and for that, they get a B+. Maybe A-, considering the actual battle scenes were appropriately horrific and had you on the edge of your seat.
B. That being said, they crammed so much history into this story that critical pieces only got cursory mention (ie. the Battle of the Coral Sea and the attacks on Yorktown were given lip service, at best.). If I hadn't known the actual history of the battle(s) depicted, I would've been a little lost.
C. In short, This story needs to be properly told in at least a five or six hour miniseries, probably on Netflix or HBO, to do it proper justice, and to address some of the character development.
Other than all that, if you want to get a glimpse of one of the pivotal military actions in our nation's history, go see this movie.
