Tuck Everlasting is a fantasy fiction novel by Natalie Babbitt. The book revolves around the story of a ten-year-old girl named Winnifred Foster, but she goes by Winnie. Winnie loves a lot of things but being detained isn’t one of them. She was born into a rich family that did rich family things, however, Winnie wasn’t afraid of getting messy, she wanted to run through the woods and roll in the grass. She didn’t want the rich kid life, so she ran. She ran so far from home that she couldn’t see it anymore. Because Winnifred had never run so far before, she didn’t exactly know how to get back, she didn’t know the woods her family owned. Lucky for her someone did, Jesse Tuck did. With these two meeting in the woods, their reaction was anything but unexpected. Both jaws dropped, Winnie had caught him doing something strange a minute earlier, drinking from a small spring under a great tree. She was in need of an explanation, but Jesse wasn’t exactly keen on giving it to her until later on in the story. Winnie will soon learn that you can’t have living without death, she must keep an open mind if she wishes to learn these truths.Natalie Babbitt wrote this story from a toads point of view, when saying that I mean she wrote it in a style that is detailed, like if something was close to the ground; able to see the bark on a tree or the dew on the grass. She wrote it as if something was watching the actions of the story from afar, yet close. Personally, I prefer this type of narration because it doesn’t give a bias point of view, like if the story was written in a first-person view. Babbitt did well at giving each chapter a slight cliffhanger, leaving you wanting more of the everlasting suspense. Elaborating on what I liked about the book is that it had just enough detail, the length of the book is a little shorter than others I’ve read but it’s pleasant to read. This is the type of book I would read on a rainy summer day when I just want to escape the stress that is reality. Overall it’s a good book, with wonderful detail and an intriguing plot. I would definitely recommend this book to friends and family.
