It’s a slow burner and it’s not for everyone.
When you watch this film do close the curtains. There should be no light while watching this film. But be prepared for a long non-narrative film.
This film is therapeutic in a way. It reminds me so much of my childhood and how my younger brother couldn’t cross the short corridor to my parents room. My older brother and I, in our machismo wouldn’t or couldn’t escort him because we were also both afraid. But we could not admit it.
We hid those fears with teasing. This film laid bare to me the fears all my brothers had. That short hallway with a staircase going up and down. It was terrifying. A liminal space? Perhaps?
The disconcerting effect of this film plus the soundtrack makes for an effective film and I absolutely love it.
In fact, I watch this now when I want to fall asleep. It’s done brilliantly. I can’t wait to see what this director does next!
