I'm not one for these types of movies. But I think in this case it was necessary to show the rawness of that type of life in order to get a full picture of events.
There are many running themes and messages one can get from this film but the over encompassing messaging that I took away that was beautiful and real was:
The story of Anora and her distorted view of reality and love.
Throughout the whole movie she fell in love (or so she thought) with a man boy who didn't even truly care about her - she fell in love with him for his money (a way out) and carefree way of being.
The ending of the movie is so great because it truly shows how she is not great at reading people as much as she thinks she is - she doesn't see things as they really are - and finally she doesn't feel comfortable with true love. The irony of her judging the man boy for his decisions meanwhile her decision making isn't all there either.
It's the story of a broken young woman and a broken young man. And many other broken people. And it leaves it open in the end for you to imagine her healing.
And although the movie was not a religious film in any way: I pray for any woman or man that finds themselves in that broken state. That in the pits of sorrow and darkness they are able to look up. Surrender and submit to the Holy one. And let the healing begin. There are many things we cannot fix about ourselves. But with the right posture and time God can fix it all within us - if we just let him.
Sometimes we fight the very thing that can save us. And this movie demonstrates it.
The one guy who clearly saw the real her, still enjoyed her company, and could probably help her become a better person is the one she treated the worst. And the guy who would've destroyed her whole life - she practically wanted to keep forever.
