27 down was a pathbreaking film in Indian New Wave Cinema made by Avtar Krishn Kaul on a book โ Atharah Suraj ek paudheโ by Ramesh Bakshi. Film is a comment on change which was happening in urban life and in Lives of Youth in 70โs. Avatar Ji used Train as a metaphor in the film and itโs sound to reflect the chaos of the mind of youth who were yet to be rebellious. During the journey in 27 down Bombay Varanasi Express a young Ticket collector Sanjay (who wanted to be an Artists )contemplate on his accidental life and this journey to Varanasi throws some light to show the lost path to find true happiness and meaning in life , Alas! too late. Continuous train sound in film makes viewers restless unknowingly and brings them close to state of mind of main protagonist Sanjay. 27 down is also an archive if you want to see the lives inside the trains and around the train stations in early 70โs.
