I watched this , knowing basically nothing about Rwanda and its history. I thought it was a great show, but really, it could have been so much better. The main thing that I found missing was enough of an exploration of the protagonist, Kate, as a character, and her relationships.
Her dialogues are full of angst, like a walking poster child of trauma - they don't sound natural. It's like the singular focus of this character - nothing else even seems to register to her. The relationship with her adoptee mother is barely touched or explored - which felt like a huge glaring gap in Kate's character development. They just don't give her enough of a balanced portrayal to make her seem real.
