Review: WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
reason:
Tomorrow x3 is one of the worst books i have ever had the misfortune to read.
let me explain:
for reference, a trophic cascade is when the absence of a predator causes the number of prey individuals to rise exponentially in an ecosystem.
I would call Tomorrow x3 a Trope-ic Cascade, where the narrative collapses upon itself due to the sheer number of forced tropes, unearned tension, promotion of criminality and most importantly, inconsistent characters.
It annoys me to no end how much people think they know about gamers and the gaming community. No one would kill a developer for allowing Gay Marriage in a video game, which they dont even have to follow.
Secondly, allow me to dissect these characters. Sam, a shy boy who has more insecurities than games, and who is struggling and needs an expensive surgery, would NOT shout out "YOU HAVE DIED OF DYSENTERY" on a crowded train platform where others are bound to be embarrassed at the very sight of him. Sadie, an icon of feminism in male-dominated professions, is shown to stop bathing and eating after Dov, a PROFESSOR, grooms her (let us not forget Dov is married), then she, again, enters into a relationship with him just for a graphics engine (she could have just asked, or used the web to download one for free or learn to code one) - and then, despite it being her choice, she blames Sam for 'prostituting her to Dov'.
I feel for Sam. not once does Sadie even say that she has missed him. the ending? insufficient. you are telling me they went through all that - and she just hands him a game disc and leaves on a plane?
Remember in the beginning of the book they swore they wouldn't cut off contact for years at a time again? Well, Sadie broke it at the end. Another infuriating subplot forced in for no rhyme or reason.
Sam's ability to talk through game NPC's is incredibly unrealistic. NPCs are scripted. Unless he was updating the game and the NPC responses every second of every day, he could not have done so. This in itself is impossible as game updates take time to 'cook' (preparing game assets and content for specific platforms) that can range from minutes to days.
Tomorrow x3 is boring, bland and there is nothing memorable about it. The book drips of despair and depression, I did not like reading even the first chapter. Skipping pages in between did not make me feel like I had missed anything important. It was not a fun experience.
RATING - Negative 10 out of 10
