Overall, this movie was a disappointment as it adds little to nothing to the Matrix storyline. Basically, it just feels like a “nostalgia grab” that beckons to the original film’s charm but failed in a variety of ways.
First of all, the action sequences were basically rehashed from the previous installments. There were no ground breaking camera angles, no boundary pushing fighting sequences, and at times it leaned a bit too heavily on the originals’ lore.
Secondly, when you base the movie around the original leading actors but failed to do so with the supporting cast, you tend to create a black hole in the hearts and minds of the hard core fan base. Especially when so much time was spent by the fan base connecting with these characters. Morpheus is Lawrence Fishburne…Agent Smith is Hugo Weaving.
Lastly, the big continuity holes, and often times the reasoning behind many of the choices made by the “Wizard behind the curtain” posed more questions than answers. For example, Neo basically lost all his powers and was helpless when facing off against the “puppet master”. Basically, he was at the mercy of his foes and made him seem rather weak for most of the movie. It’s as if Neo/Keanu we’re just along for the ride. This problem was not seen in other characters like Trinity, Agent Smith or Morpheus (which is a travesty all of its own).
In closing, the original “Revolutions” ending failed to bring closure to many fans. If “Resurrections” was trying to create a sense of closure, it failed on so many levels. In the end, it basically cheapens the story by simply becoming another failed attempt at a cash cow. An answer to a question that really could have been answered in “Revolutions”.
