I’m a great fan of the Viking series and accept that it matches more palatable modern morals to the story and cast than The Northman. Perhaps the movie is a far more accurate portrayal of the time and the people. If it is, and this is why it is so bleak, then this is what makes it not as enjoyable as perhaps I expected. There is no “ light and dark” and this makes it hard to grab hold of a character. Again maybe it is it’s accuracy and research that is working against it. The story is too long and I think would have benefited from portraying more events around the main character before he went to Iceland. It is this period of him enacting his revenge I find too long. It clearly borrows from Shakespeare particularly in one key Nicole Kidman scene. This is not a criticism, it just does. So overall it’s not a movie I would recommend highly for someone to go to the trouble of watching at the cinema.
