This game is a genuine masterpiece.
To start, the visuals really feel like we're finally getting to see the vision the original creators had. No more of the locked combat with 5 or so attack animations, or pixels. The game of flashy, beautiful, and grandiose in all the correct ways. There are scenes in the game that have, on their own brought me to tears. Enemy Spells look more powerful than ever.
Next is the combat, one of the most common complaints I've seen is that it feels samey, like a spam square to win. And this is true, however it's only true if you're playing the game wrong. The combat was developed by ryota Suzuki, the same person who did the combat for dmc5. Knowing this, as a player, it's crucial that you understand that the combat isn't just about survival, it's about owning the enemy completely. Youtuber max0r said this in regards to dmc5, and the same holds true here. Sure I can spam square and kill the enemies without effort, but it's way more fun to play actually combo and juggle the enemies, completely annihilating them. It's so much more fun and engaging when you play this way.
The soundtrack is next and well what needs to be said. It's masayoshi soken. The same man who did the ffxiv soundtrack, which is considered to be one of the best parts of that game, and the same is true for this as well! Every song fits the scene perfectly. Never a missed opportunity.
The games only flaws really fall on the side quests, they do feel a bit underdeveloped, but I'll take 20 underdeveloped side quests coupled with this stellar story full of dark twists and turns at every corner.
Each villain feels like a unique character, no more stereotypical jrpg villains with the same set of motives. Not every ff needs to be this wild whacky and zaney adventure that follows the stereotypical ff template. The darkness of this game, added by its M rating truly make this game unique among its peers.
The only other fault I can give it, is it's ps5 exclusivity. When playing on ps5, 4k in fps mode. It tends to have frame dips occasionally. Coupled with the lack of graphics settings that you get with a pc release, it can be bad during certain points of the game. But despite that and despite it running on a console with the power of essentially a 2070s the game still performs well enough, the dips that you do experience never truly take away from the experience.
If I had to vote, I'd say this is the strongest contender for goty so far. Only thing close is zelda.
