While it is a decent movie to watch at home from the comfort of your living room on Disney+, The Marvels feels as though it should have started there to begin with. I love the MCU for entertainment, inspiring stories and inspiration - but aside from some fun team ups and comedic and sweet moments, this movie failed to meet the extremely high precedence the MCU has built for itself.
I don't read comics, but regardless I felt the villian was too one note and more a physical obstacle for the heroes to overcome. The story was weak, and while the movie takes place in so many spaces (literally IN SPACE), it felt small in scale. Iman was my favorite part of The Marvels, as you can tell she is very much her character and just happy to be there.
When the past team ups in the MCU (that have brought together characters we care about with known backgrounds that we've seen on tv screens previously) are Avengers Infinity War, Endgame, and Spiderman: No Way Home, this movie has no chance of living up to those standards from lack of good story, a so-so villian and stakes that don't feel heightened until the end of the movie. But it's still good to watch to pass a rainy afternoon or if you like cats.
