I had to watch the movie for my film class and thought I might as well post my review for this painfully long and overrated gang movie for anyone who might need some ideas for their own projects. The pace of West Side Story was okay, but the long length of the film is not suited for an audience who struggles with focusing for a long time. There is a fine line between loving and hating this film, with an attempt to ignore my resentment for the work I do, I can say that I do not dislike the movie. The sound design was decent and some moments I could easily find humorous. I laffed a lot even if it was at the shortcomings of the film. I also liked a lot of the costume design and cinematography, but the movie was long and some of the song tunes were unentertaining which distracted me from the lyrics. the overly forced fake "Spanish" accents were a bit Exaggerated and unauthentic in a sense. The fight scene choreography was at least a bit interesting but not very action-oriented. I suppose this makes sense as it is a musical and the movements are more dance-like but when I watch it it's like watching a middle school play on my screen. Sometimes when the actor slip-up it is hilarious at the beginning of the movie I'm pretty sure I saw one of the guys (Potentially snowboy) in the Jets gang cross his eyes Slightly for a moment. Similar things also happened in some of the more emotional points in the film although I believe I might pick up on it more than others do and I'm not saying they're not great actors. Overall the movie is okay But not an experience I appreciated or enjoyed.
